WhetGuide exists to answer one question well: which one should I buy? Most knife sharpening content online is either a manufacturer's marketing or a list of whatever pays the highest commission. We try to do the opposite: start from what you're actually trying to do, and recommend the product that fits, including telling you when you don't need to spend more.
Who we write for
Our readers are home cooks, pocket-knife owners and anyone with a drawer of dull knives. We write in plain language, explain the specs that actually matter, and say who each product is wrong for, not just who it suits.
What our recommendations are based on
We base every pick on evidence we can point to: manufacturer specifications (grits, angles, abrasive types), Amazon sales and rating data, and the sharpening guidance knife makers publish for their own steels. We publish the details of our process on our How we research page.
Pages labeled How we pick are research-based: we compare specifications, manufacturer instructions and long-term owner feedback. We'll say clearly when a recommendation comes from hands-on sharpening.
How we make money
WhetGuide is reader-supported. When you buy through our links to Amazon, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Commissions never decide which product we recommend, and we don't accept payment for placement. See our privacy and affiliate disclosure.
Keeping guides current
Products, prices and availability change constantly. Each guide shows the date it was last updated, and we re-check our recommendations and product data on a regular schedule. If something has changed, we update the page rather than leave old advice in place.
